Lapu-lapu City Description

Lapu-Lapu City prides itself as s a 1st class highly urbanized city in Cebu. According to the 2000 census, Lapu-lapu City has a population of 217,019 people. An industrial center in the Visayas region, Lapu-lapu City has an industrial tax-free zone known as the Mactan Export Processing Zone. Lapu-lapu City is also well noted for thermal installation that supply energy needs for industries in the area.

Also of historical significance, Lapu-lapu City is named after the first native chieftain to have let battle against Spanish colonizers. A monument of Chief Lapu-lapu stand in Lapu-lapu City’s plaza, celebrating his heroism on defending native territory. Right on the same ground, another marker represents Magellan (the Portugese explorer whom Lapu-lapu’s troops contended with).

Lapu-lapu City occupies most of Mactan Island, one kilometer from the mainland Cebu Island, extending to the whole of Olango Island (plus a few other islets) five kilometers further to the southeast.Lapu-lapu City is linked to Mandaue City on mainland Cebu by the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the second busiest airport in the Philippines, is located in Lapu-Lapu City. A port in Lapu-lapu City accommodates a variety of sea vessels. These transportation facilities allow for access to Lapu-lapu City from Manila, directly, either by ship or plane.
